DescriptionPittsburgh Tribune-Review article.

An excerpt...
"Mayor Bob O'Connor was in serious condition Sunday night in a neuro-intensive care unit at UPMC Shadyside following emergency surgery to drain fluid accumulating in his brain, according to a medical source close to the case.

Just before the surgery O'Connor appointed Yarone Zober, the newly appointed director of policy and the General Services Department, as deputy mayor, city officials said.

The unexpected surgery was prompted by a sudden deterioration in O'Connor's mental alertness, according to the medical source.

O'Connor yesterday morning became lethargic, according to the source.

Doctors at the hospital, where O'Connor has been hospitalized for four weeks, performed an MRI that prompted them to call in a neurosurgeon to perform the 30-minute surgery.

Without the procedure, O'Connor's condition would have worsened with the fluid causing even more pressure on the brain, the source said. "
