DescriptionIt looks like the sleepy campaign for the 2nd Congressional District is about to liven up, with word that state Rep. Karen Carter is poised to challenge embattled incumbent William Jefferson.

With the deadline to sign up for the Nov. 7 contest just a week away, only Jefferson, the New Orleans Democrat who has held the seat since 1990, and political newcomer Joseph Lavigne, a 30-year-old Republican lawyer, are the only announced candidates.

State Sen. Derrick Shepherd, D-Marerro, is scheduled to enter the race Monday.

But recent signals from Carter, D-New Orleans, triggered the loudest political buzz.

A member of the BOLD political organization, Carter has long been rumored as a likely opponent for Jefferson, the target of a wide-ranging federal corruption probe.

For months, Carter has been keeping her cards close to her vest, saying only that she was considering a run for Congress. Last week, several local powerbrokers said privately that she has informed them that she was in.

Carter said she has not made a final decision, but she confirmed that she is close.

"I'm a lot farther along than I was last week," she said Thursday. "I'd say I'm moving in a positive direction toward a run. But I've got some Is to dot and some Ts to cross."

While Shepherd's position as a state senator is higher on the political food chain than Carter's seat in the House, she has the advantage of powerful political connections.

Among the BOLD leaders expected to support her candidacy and help her raise money are City Council President Oliver Thomas, former Councilman Jim Singleton, Dryades YMCA director and New Orleans Aviation Board member Doug Evans and her father, former Assessor Ken Carter, a wealthy lawyer.
