DescriptionRepublican Rep. Sue W. Kelly of New York’s 19th District — who is facing an unusually strong Democratic effort to oust her from her seat in a Republican-leaning stretch of the Hudson Valley — managed to protect one of her political flanks this week: Her lawyers persuaded state election officials to disqualify a candidate who filed to run on the state’s Working Families Party line, who they contended was maneuvering to save the slot for the winner of the district’s Sept. 12 Democratic primary.

Kelly spokesman Jay Townsend told CQPolitics.com the campaign’s concern was that Eisemann was acting as a placeholder, and that he would drop out after the primary and cede the spot to the Democratic candidate.

Republicans lead Democrats slightly in voter registration, 36 percent to 32 percent; a quarter of the district’s voters do not declare their party and the balance are registered with the Working Families Party, the Conservative and Independence parties — the latter two of which gave their ballot lines to Kelly this year, as they have in the past.
