Description | In a letter delivered to President Bush Thursday, Sen. David Vitter (R-Louisiana) had strong words for the Army Corps of Engineers regarding its progress, or the lack thereof, on repairs to the city’s pumps and levee systems.
Vitter said “ongoing failures” by the Corps threaten to allow major flooding this hurricane season.
He said the failures were not due to engineering obstacles; rather, "They are due to multiple Corps organizational failures, a lack of a true sense of emergency and urgency, and conscious decisions to save money rather than maximize pumping capacity for this hurricane season.”
Appearing on the Eyewitness News at Noon Thursday, Vitter said he was very concerned about the potential for flooding in Orleans and Jefferson Parishes because the Corps was behind in getting enough pumping capacity in case of a major rainstorm.
