Description | Martha Rainville, a Republican candidate for the U.S. House, said she did not know a GOP congressman's political action committee that donated money to her campaign had ties to indicted Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas, and Jack Abramoff, a lobbyist who pleaded guilty to improperly influencing members of Congress.
She also said she was unaware that the committee that sent her the money has received major contributions from tobacco interests, funds she has said she would refuse.
"I do not pretend to know everything," said Rainville, the outgoing commander of the Vermont National Guard who is embarking on her first statewide political campaign. "This is something we may well need to look into."
Rainville confirmed last week that she received $2,000 from the Rely On Your Beliefs fund, a political action committee founded by Rep. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., the House majority whip who lost his party's vote earlier this month to replace DeLay as majority leader.
The $2,000, deposited into her campaign account Feb. 2, is identical to the amount that Blunt's PAC reported donating to her exploratory committee in October. Rainville said she never received the October donation.
According to an Oct. 5 Associated Press report, DeLay and his Americans for a Republican Majority Political Action Committee donated $150,000 to Blunt's Rely On Your Beliefs PAC in 2000. |
