WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Martha Rainville, seeking the Republican nomination for the state's open U.S. House seat, says she would decline if President Bush offered to campaign for her in Vermont.

"Although, in one sense, it would seem a little surprising to some people to say no thank you' to the president of the United States, I think his time is better spent on other things, and I would look forward to having perhaps some other people come up and speak on my behalf," Rainville said in an interview with the Valley News.

Asked whom she would prefer instead, Rainville, who is the head of the Vermont National Guard, named U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona, a former prisoner of war in Vietnam who lost to Bush in the 2000 Republican presidential primary.

"I would really, without speaking out of turn or putting anybody on the spot, I would love Senator McCain to come up, and hopefully one day he might. We'll see," Rainville said.
