Description | MADISON, Wis.— Republican state Sen. Robert Welch officially announced Sunday he will run for U.S. Senate against incumbent Democrat Russ Feingold.
Welch ran against U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl in 1994. His name has been mentioned as a possible Feingold challenger all spring.
He said he made the decision to formally run after gauging support around Wisconsin and finishing work on the state budget last month. Welch serves on the powerful legislative Joint Finance Committee, which revises governors' budgets before forwarding them to the full Legislature.
"Now we're open for business," Welch, of Redgranite, said. "It comes down to two things. I believe I can really make a difference on the two big issues of the day, foreign policy and the economy." |
