Description | Democratic King County Executive Ron Sims' record in office has fallen short of perfection. Shortcomings in the elections office were harshly highlighted by an agonizingly tight governor's race. A costly overhaul of the county computer system may be even more so. And he's won less than rave reviews for his support of a Critical Areas Ordinance that some suburban and rural county residents view as overzealous, even confiscatory.
Sims also carries with him the political bruises of his own gubernatorial primary campaign and its quixotic call for a state income tax.
In all, Sims might have been politically vulnerable in his bid for re-election, were county Republicans to have produced a dynamic challenger. They fell short with County Councilman David Irons.
Irons is an earnest, intelligent politician, but his campaign has been cluttered with evasions on key issues and checkered with code words designed to send reassuring signals to his conservative base beneath a moderate's veneer. |
