Description | DEMOCRAT CHANGES TUNE ON SCHWARZENEGGER

Controller Steve Westly, the former eBay executive who is now state controller, edged a little closer to joining the 2006 governor's race Thursday, announcing that he had formed an exploratory committee to consider the office.
Westly, 48, has served just one term as controller and would have to give up a second if he decided to enter the Democratic primary for governor. So far, Treasurer Phil Angelides is the only candidate to enter the race, although Bill Lockyer, the attorney general, has said he is interested in running. Schwarzenegger has not said whether he will run for re-election.
In the past, Westly has said he would run only if Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger did not. But the governor is looking vulnerable, after a monthslong assault from nurses, teachers, firefighters and police officers. Schwarzenegger's approval rating is hovering around 50 percent, which is traditionally the danger point for an incumbent.
In a telephone interview Thursday, Westly explained his change of mind by saying that Schwarzenegger in his second year in office had ``taken a hard turn to the right. I think it's the wrong turn for the state.'' |
