Description | Ontario MP Pat O'Brien announced today that he will remain in the Liberal caucus, after he openly mused about leaving the party.
Acknowledging that earlier in the week he was close to sitting as an Independent, O'Brien said he made his final decision last night, and informed Prime Minister Paul Martin this morning.
O'Brien, who represents the Ontario riding of London-Fanshawe, said he didn't receive anything from the prime minister in exchange for staying. But he did ask him for reassurances that there will be full public hearings on the gay marriage bill.
"I will do what I feel I have to do in good conscience," O'Brien told reporters at a news conference Thursday morning.
O'Brien's decision to stay will surely help Martin, who is fighting falling poll numbers over explosive testimony at the sponsorship inquiry. The prime minister is also fighting internal dissension. |
