Description | A bill that would pre-empt local minimum wage ordinances, like the one in Madison, was advanced on a party-line vote Wednesday by a state Senate Committee.
Wisconsin's minimum wage is $5.15 per hour and has been unchanged since1997. A state labor-business panel recommended administrative rules to raise that to $6.50 per hour in two steps, but that was blocked by Republican-controlled legislative committees.
Madison has adopted an ordinance raising its minimum wage to $7.75 by the end of 2007. Milwaukee also adopted its own wage levels, and legislation is pending in the LaCrosse City Council. Business interests have sued to try to upset the Madison ordinance. |
