DescriptionWhen showered with post-election criticism of her gubernatorial campaign, Christine Gregoire shouldered responsibility for its shortcomings, and sent warm holiday notes to her political handlers.

A more predictable politician's response would have been a Clinton-style blowup at staff, the icy stare of a Carter or public beheading of a campaign manager in the manner of a Kerry or Dean.

Hence, Gregoire's gentle response to a near-loss, after polls had her well ahead, reveals shortcomings. Immediate fixes are needed when -- and if -- she becomes governor.

A centerpiece of Gregoire's campaign was the promise to invest tobacco settlement money in making Washington a biotechnology research center for the nation.

It's a worthy goal, but who benefits? The technology economy of central Puget Sound, that's who -- not people around the state who're trying to work hard and play by the rules, but find themselves falling out of the middle class.

What promise did Gregoire's proposal hold out for a laid-off Kaiser Aluminum worker in Spokane? What attraction did it have for a Whatcom County cold storage worker frozen out by the Enron-manipulated 2000-2001 power "shortage?"

She just wasn't around. A message to Gregoire as governor: Get out of Olympia, and listen to why citizens have come to view our state government as so cumbersome.
