Description | Andy McKenna, president of Morton-based Schwarz Paper Company, is considered a leading contender to follow Judy Baar-Topinka as chairman of the IL GOP. Last month the IL GOP finance committee announced they were endorsing McKenna to step into the role.
McKenna first indicated his concern about the Illinois Republican Party's leadership in 2003, when IllinoisLeader.com interviewed him as a candidate for U.S. Senate.
"I felt we needed a new kind of leadership in Illinois in the Republican party of Illinois," he said. "I think we all can observe the party is going through a transition. I felt it's time for a new kind of leader to step forward."
McKenna espoused conservative views on fiscal and social issues during the Senate campaign, but emphasized that what mattered is how those views were applied as what he thought would unite the divided wings of the IL GOP.
"I do think that the conservative principles of the party are not the problem; it's a question of how you apply those principles to make life better for people," he said in 2003. "I felt my experience in business and the community could help me see some ways you can make life better, and that's the message we need to get out there." |
