DescriptionBroadcasting the first attack ad in the Democratic race for the U.S. Senate, Peter Deutsch is airing a commercial that says rival Betty Castor didn't ''speak out'' against a professor accused of aiding Palestinian terrorists while she was university president.

Deutsch -- and a group launched by his allies -- have been criticizing Castor's response to University of South Florida professor Sami al Arian for months.

But the accusation could inflict more damage to Castor's campaign in the bright glare of television and in the final week before the Aug. 31 primary, when voters pay the most attention.

''This 11th-hour attack really comes as no surprise, with all the polls showing Betty as the front-runner in the race and the strongest candidate against the Republicans,'' Castor spokesman Matt Burgess said in a written statement. ``Deutsch isn't just nasty, he's desperate.''

In the ad, the screen is dark except for the dialogue between two older women. One suggests Castor ''can't win'' the Nov. 2 general election because the Republican nominee will portray her as weak on terrorism.

Democrats are anxious to retain the seat now held by U.S. Sen. Bob Graham, who is retiring after 18 years in Washington.

He and U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson recently urged the Democratic candidates to run clean campaigns, fearing that any attacks would weaken the candidate who emerges as nominee. They both indicated displeasure with Deutsch's new ad.
