Description (Belmar, NJ) At an early morning planning meeting, Republican State Senate candidate Rich Pezzullo (www.pezzullo.com) responded to questions regarding allegations of billing improprieties made about his opponent. "Senator Bennett has not been accused of any crime and he is of course innocent until proven guilty."

Pezzullo does believe that his opponent's self-inflicted problems would have an effect on the election and could affect state policy for years to come. He said, "These stories increase the worries of so many Republicans like myself who believe that Senator Bennett's ethical and potential legal problems make him unelectable in November. With a 20-20 Senate, these problems cannot be ignored."

"The electablitiy of our candidates has got to be the most important issue in a primary election because we cannot allow the Republican party to lose control of the Senate at this critical point in our history," Pezzullo said.

Pezzullo went on to talk about the problems facing the state. "We have a governor who is totally out of touch with the economic realities of public policy. He is alienating every source of economic relief in favor of attracting as many votes and repaying as many favors as possible. Worse yet, in the interest of cronyism or by virtue of ineptitude, Jim McGreevey is turning our economic slowdown into a disaster."

Pezzullo took issue with the courts as well. "We have activist judges that insist on creating legislation from the bench, where de facto taxes are levied, elections are manipulated and legal scholars scratch their heads looking for things in the constitution that just aren't there."

"Jim McGreevey must be contained, the activist judges must be challenged and we need to build a strong Republican Senate to do that. My opponent is the wrong man at the wrong time for that job."

"I would like the general election to be about the candidates' vision for making New Jersey an economic powerhouse where housing becomes affordable because more people can afford housing, where companies are eager to locate because the workforce is talented, well educated and motivated and where children grow up wanting to live in their hometowns and raise their families in peace and security." Pezzullo said, "And everything you read or hear about my opponent will prevent that from happening."

Pezzullo repeated his call for on Bennett to withdraw from the race and to donate his campaign funds to the Senate Republican Majority efforts to win the Upper House this fall.

Pezzullo and Bennett are competing in the 12th legislative district, which includes the Monmouth County towns of Fair Haven, Little Silver, Oceanport, Shrewsbury Township, Shrewsbury Borough, Red Bank, Tinton Falls, Colts Neck, Marlboro, Manalapan, Englishtown, Freehold Township, Freehold Borough and Millstone as well as East Windsor and Hightstown in Mercer County.
