For years, the chief criticisms of veteran Republican Congressman Phil Crane were that he was ineffective and not in touch with the folks back home in the Northwest suburbs.
Typically, the people leveling those charges were either Democratic opponents or Republican primary challengers. In the past month, however, no less than three top Republicans, including House Speaker Dennis Hastert, have said Crane needs to spend more time in his district to remain effective.
And even Crane admits he's somewhat worried about his fall race against Democrat Melissa Bean of Barrington, recently telling a gathering of the Palatine Township GOP that the national Democrats were gunning for him this year.
That might be a slight exaggeration. The national party has yet to give Bean a dime in campaign money and, when pressed, Hastert says he thinks Crane will "be fine."
But after Bean came closer than any other Democrat to defeating the long-serving Crane in 2002, their rematch for the 8th Congressional District is shaping up to be one of the top suburban contests on the Nov. 2 ballot. |
