Description | Publicly, the GOP primary for Central Kentucky's 6th Congressional District seat looks tame, a low-budget contest among two political newcomers and a 14-year veteran of the state Senate.
But behind the scenes, the jockeying has been just as intense as in the short, aggressive push that preceded February's special election to succeed Gov. Ernie Fletcher, who left the seat to take the governor's office last year.
In the winter contest, Democrat Ben Chandler emerged with a 10-point victory after trading punches with Republican Alice Forgy Kerr in negative TV ads, phone calls and mailers.
Now, state Sen. Tom Buford of Nicholasville faces Lexington attorney Bryan Samuel Coffman and Don Swarthout, the president of a Christian non-profit group. The three have similar positions on several issues.
