Description | ATLANTA - A lawmaker first elected to the Georgia Legislature during the FDR administration has announced his retirement.
Sen. Hugh Gillis, an 85-year-old Democrat, is the nation's longest-serving lawmaker.
Gillis, of the central Georgia town of Soperton, has served in the Senate since 1962. He previously served 12 years in the state House — his first term starting in 1941, before the United States entered World War II.
