Description | U.S. Rep. Peter Deutsch claimed in a news release last month that he "raised" $1.1 million for his U.S. Senate campaign, but failed to say that nearly half of that money came out of his own pocket.
Deutsch benefited from a blitz of publicity noting that his fund raising during the first quarter had nearly tied one his opponents in the race, Betty Castor, and that he had collected far more money than the third candidate, Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas.
But it turns out that Deutsch actually "raised" less in contributions than both of his rivals during the first three months of the year. Deutsch got $556,000 in contributions and loaned his campaign $500,000, according to his campaign contribution report.
