Description | Ronald Reagan dime bill is losing currency
The Hill
Legislation that would put the image of former President Ronald Reagan on the dime has stalled and is unlikely to move this year. House Rules Committee Chairman David Dreier (R-Calif.) last week withdrew his support of the bill sponsored by Rep. Mark Souder (R-Ind.). A Dreier spokeswoman said the congressman no longer supports the measure because former first lady Nancy Reagan has come out against it. Reagan in December said she hoped GOP leaders pull the bill, adding that it would be wrong to remove the image of former President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Souder, who could not be contacted for comment, has offered to compromise, claiming he would support putting Roosevelt on half the dimes and Reagan on the other half. He has also attempted to downplay Nancy Reagan’s objections to his legislation, which has attracted the support of House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) and House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas). Meanwhile, a bill introduced by Rep. James McGovern (D-Mass.) that seeks to reaffirm FDR’s image on the dime has collected 130 co-sponsors — 31 more than Souder’s. |
