Description | The woman seeking to replace Justice Warren McGraw gave $976 to his 1998 campaign, leaving doubts within the state Republican Party hierarchy about her campaign's sincerity.
"It raises a lot of questions," Gary Abernathy, state GOP executive director, said of the donation.
The misgivings about Linda Rice's Republican credentials are so serious within the state party that its Executive Committee has taken the unusual step of endorsing her primary opponent, Charleston corporate lawyer Brent Benjamin.
Rice has not always been a Republican. She said she was a registered Democrat for nearly three decades. In 1996, she helped raise money for Democrat Charlotte Pritt's gubernatorial campaign.
She became increasingly frustrated with the party, though, as she watched Democrats abandon Pritt for Republican Cecil Underwood's camp.
"There was a great deal of Democratic involvement in the defeat of Charlotte Pritt, and it quite frankly sickened me," she said.
So in December 1996, a few weeks after Underwood beat Pritt, Rice registered as a Republican, according to state GOP records.
Two years later, she and her law partner, James Robinson, spent $1,952.02 on a last-minute mailing for McGraw's 1998 Supreme Court campaign, according to campaign finance records.
