Description | Asian Americans
Asians came to America in the late 1800s to help build Americas rails and highways and farm the western territories. They came from China, Japan, Korea and the Philippines. Generations later, their descendants have become one of the most successful immigrant stories in the history of this nation finding themselves in affluence and political power. George Ariyoshi [Japanese], Benjamin Cayetano [Filipino] and Gary Locke [Chinese] are the first Asian Americans to rise to Governorships. Norm Mineta was the first Asian American cabinet member.
In more recent years a new wave of immigration from places like the former Indochina and Southeast Asia are making their way to our shores to find work in our manufacturing industries. This migration is reshaping America's profile once again.
