Description47-member lower house of the bicameral Bhutanese parliament (also known as the Chi Tshog).

All 47 members are directly elected by the citizens of constituencies from each of the 20 districts (or dzongkhags) of Bhutan and serve a five-year term.

Members are elected via a "first past the post" system and elections are held in two rounds: Bhutanese vote for the political party of their choice in the first round, then, in the second round, Bhutanese choose between two candidates nominated by the final two top parties.

The National Assembly in its current 'Westminster-style' form (and Bhutan's bicameral legislative system, generally) was established by Royal Decree on June 30, 2007. This Decree also permitted the creation of political parties (political parties were prohibited from 1953 to 2007).

A nascent National Assembly was decreed in 1953 as a powerless consultative body by the King of Bhutan (the Druk Gyalpo), Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, who reigned between March 30, 1952 to July 21, 1972.

Elections were first held for the reborn National Assembly on March 24, 2008.
