Description | The prime minister is elected as head of government by majority vote of the Tongan Parliament and appointed by the king. The position was known as premier until 1970.
The prime minister is also a member of the Privy Council to the king (also called the "Cabinet of Tonga"). The Privy Council includes the prime minister's cabinet, the Governor of Ha'apai and the Governor of Vava'u (who serve ex officio). The Tongan Constitution of 1875 stipulates that the prime minister and his ministers can be dismissed instantly by the king. |
