DescriptionOne of two chartered cities (defined as cities administered under their own charters rather than by federal law) or 'astedader akabibi'.

Addis Ababa is both the capital of Ethiopia and of the Oromia regional state.

Upon the revolutionist regime's takeover in 1991, Addis Ababa was at first made a regional state with a regional government, a structure that was changed to 'Chartered City' by the constitution in 1995.

The federal government moved the capital to Amada in 2000 mainly to spite secession forces in the state led by the Oromo Liberation Front (since outlawed and labelled a terrorist organization), returning it to Addis Ababa in 2005 after much national protest.

Addis Ababa has developed into a well-planned, well-run and safe, beautiful city popular as a base with, or convention center for, continental and regional organizations,

It is dubbed "the political capital of Africa."
