Description | The government was led by a "Chief Minister" since 1956 until it switched to "Prime Minister" on independence in August 31, 1962 (the Minister happened to be the same person, Eric Williams). Actual formation, some would say "legitimization," of this position came with the promulgation of the constitutional republic on September 24, 1976.
Prime Minister serves for five years. |
