Description |
Zhytomyrska oblast (Żytomierzczyna in Polish) is an oblast' (province) of northern Ukraine. Historically, the province is a part of Ukrainian Polissya. Its capital is Zhytomyr.
The area of the region is 29,900 km2. Its population (as of 2004-05-01) is 1.4 million.
The economy of Zhytomyrs'ka oblast' mostly dealt with mining of granite and other construction stone, forestry, agriculture and various machinery manufacturing.
The north-western part of the province is highly affected by the Chernobyl accident: some of the towns and districts are devastated and included in the Chornobyl' zone, others prohibited from agriculture.
It is also the birthplace of Sviatoslav Richter.
