Description |
Trentino-Alto Adige, an area in North-east Italy consisting of the Autonomous Province of Trento and the Autonomous Province of Bolzano (South Tyrol or Alto Adige), is labelled a "region with special statute" (regione a statuto speciale), home to an ethnic German-Italian population and unique and protected languages, including ancient Ladin dialects, which are relics of colloquial or "Vulgar" Latin spoken beginning in the Late Roman Republic, Mòcheno (aka, Fersentalerisch, a Germanic language similar to Bavarian), and Cimbrian (a Germanic language spoken by the Cimbri, an ancient tribe in Europe). The region holds 282 municipalities, its capital city being Trento.
