Jēkabpils is one of ten "official" capitals in Latvia. It was granted "state" city status (valstspilsēta) by Latvia's 2020 law on administrative territories, which was approved by Latvia's Saeima on June 10, 2020 and came into force on July 1, 2021. Jēkabpils was not granted the additional right to form its own independent government, however, and it remains a part of the Jēkabpils Municipality. It is one of two capitals in the Zemgale planning region, one of the five planning regions of Latvia
