| Description |
Valmiera was granted "state" city status (valstspilsēta) by Latvia's 2020 law on administrative territories, which was approved by Latvia's Saeima on June 10, 2020 and came into force on July 1, 2021. Valmiera was not granted the additional right to form its own independent government, however, and it remains a part of the Valmiera Municipality. Valmiera is one of two capital cities in the Vidzeme planning region, one of the five planning regions of Latvia.
