| Description |
Liepāja is one of nine "state" cities (valstspilsētas) established by Latvia's 2020 law on administrative territories. The Law renamed nine cities previously known as "republic" cities with the new title of "state" cities. It was approved by Latvia's Saeima on June 10, 2020 and came into force on July 1, 2021. Liepāja is one of only seven of these nine state cities granted the right to form their own independent governments. It is one of two capitals in the Kurzeme planning region, one of the five planning regions of Latvia.
