Görlitz is one of ten districts (Landkreis) established after the administrative reform of the Federal State of Saxony effected on August 1, 2008. Görlitz was formed by merger of the Lower Silesian Upper Lusatia district (NOL), the independent city of Görlitz and the district of Löbau-Zittau. The major district towns are Weißwasser, Niesky, Löbau and Zittau.
