Description |
The Chancellor (more precisely, the Federal Chancellor) is the head of government and functions as first among equals in a cabinet he selects containing what are constitutionally called Federal Ministers. He coordinates the work of the cabinet but is not entitled to give orders to individual ministers.
The Chancellor is chosen by a working majority in the Nationalrat, then presented by the President with his cabinet to the Nationalrat for a full vote.
The Chancellor also serves as head of the Federal Chancellery, which he staffs with civil servants.
In the current coalition government established on January 7, 2020, the Chancellor shares coordinating duties with the vice Chancellor, who represents the junior party in the coalition.
