Description |
Himalayan province carved out of neighboring state Uttar Pradesh on November 9, 2000 and dubbed Uttaranchal by the BJP. Region was renamed Uttarakhand (literally, the "Northern Land") by the Congress Party in January 2007, who were spurred on by local traditionalists (area was referred to as Uttarakhand in the early Hindu scriptures) and Sanskrit purists.
Area more recently given the sobriquet "Devabhumi" which means the "Abode of the Gods" (also the name of Uttarakhand's official song), due to a surfeit of temples and religious institutions in the state, enough so that the large number of monks and religious attached to them resulted in the state holding the largest number of Sanskrit speakers, writers and readers in India. Uttarakhand is the only state to have Sanskrit as an official language [Link]
Capital is Dehradun.
