Ancient princely state formed in 1463 known as the Kingdom of Tripura ruled by Tripuri Maharajas until pressure to merge with the Indian Union brought the monarchy to an end via the Tripura Merger Agreement signed on September 9, 1949.
Indigenous peoples otherwise known as "Scheduled Tribes" account for a significant portion of the population, of which the Tripuri tribe account for a majority.
Bengali and Kokborok (a/k/a, Tripuri) are the state's official languages. Capital is Agartala.
