Description State created on November 1, 1956 from a large piece of Hyderabad State fused with Andhra State, itself carved out of Madras State on October 1, 1953.

State draws it name from the Andhra tribe who inhabited and ruled the area through Andra dynasties for a millennium.

A large part of Andhra country came under British rule starting in the late 18th century. Andhra ethnic and linguistic chauvinism started to suppurate under the British Raj, and grew more fanatical and violent after India's independence was declared in 1947. A movement called the 'Telangana Movement' was organized to unite and segregate Telegu-speaking peoples into one mega state. Its efforts reached apotheosis with the creation of the new Telegu-speaking state of Telangana on June 2, 2014, much of it ripped from Andhra Pradesh's north.

Andhra Pradesh shares a capital, Hyderabad, with Telangana until 2024.
