J. Stanley Sanders is a partner in Sanders Roberts LLP. Stan’s practice and legal expertise is in the area of business transactions, domestically and internationally, especially involving small to medium-size companies and firms doing business with governmental entities, mostly in a regulatory setting, particularly in the areas of health care and finance.
Stan’s career spans 40 years of successful law practice, before California administrative tribunals and courts, and his business negotiations skills have attracted a broad array of California and international clients from Europe, West Africa and the Republic of South Africa. He is a pioneer legal practitioner in the field of health maintenance organizations (HMOs), having legally organized many of the early pre-paid health plans in the State of California. He continues to represent an extensive range of Medi-Cal providers before the California Department of Health Care Services, the Medical Board, and related state and Federal government agencies.
His expertise in governmental legal matters has been matched by a parallel interest in government service. He served on the high-profile Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission for ten years, including the 1984 Olympic Games, and he chaired the Coliseum negotiating committee that brought the Raiders of the NFL to Los Angeles in 1982-83 and the Clippers to the stadium’s indoor venue, The Sports Arena. He presided over the City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Commission for most of the 14 years he served on that body. He also served as a member of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Board of Directors. In 1993, he was a candidate for Mayor of Los Angeles.
He was an associate in the Beverly Hills law firm of Wyman, Bautzer, Finell, Rothman & Kuchel, later a partner in the firm of Rosenfield & Sanders, and a founding partner of the Los Angeles law firm of Sanders, Tisdale, English, Tooks & Williams. He received his undergraduate degrees at Whittier College, and at Oxford University, England, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He took his law degree from the Yale Law School.
