InfoMaureen grew up in Burnaby and then moved to the Sunshine Coast, where she worked in the Bank of Montreal. After marrying John Clayton, a member of one of the pioneer families of Sechelt, she traveled and lived throughout the province (Vancouver, Port Alice, Woodfibre, Prince George, and Quesnel), while John was employed in the pulp industry.

In 1973 the Claytons returned to the Sunshine Coast, opening two successful small businesses: a sporting goods store, and a kitchen/bathroom boutique, which they owned and operated until retirement.

Maureen has a long record of public service. She was a founding member of the Auxiliary to Shorncliffe, an intermediate care home. She has maintained a continuing involvement with and interest in the senior members of our community.

Owing to a lack of palliative care beds on the Sunshine Coast, Maureen undertook the challenge of helping to create the Sunshine Coast Hospice Society, of which she became a director and president. Under her leadership the Society partnered with the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority in establishing a two-room hospice that has been operating for four years.

Maureen served for 13 years as a school trustee, including six years as Chair, representing Sechelt, in School District #46. Following her service as a school trustee, she completed the Certificate Program in Conflict Resolution at the BC Justice Institute, specializing in Negotiation and Mediation. Using this knowledge, she has conducted communication workshops for school districts and community associations.

Maureen has served the Liberal Party for six years as an executive member of the Riding Association and acted as Campaign Manager in the 1996 Provincial Election.

Because of Maureen’s interest in communication, she has acquired extensive media experience, interviewing and hosting numerous shows on the local community channel, as well as dealing with the provincial and national media during her tenure as Board Chair in the School District.

Maureen is active in her church and has held several executive positions on the church council. She also sings in the choir and is involved in various fund-raising activities.

The Claytons live in Sechelt, where they raised their three sons. They greatly enjoy their extended family, including six grandchildren.
