InfoWilliam J. Leone has been named acting United States Attorney for the District of Colorado effective January 1, 2005. Leone was hired by United States Attorney John Suthers in October of 2001 to be the First Assistant United States Attorney. In that capacity Leone supervised the daily administrative responsibilities of the office, participated in policy decisions, and is personally directing the QWEST investigation.

Prior to becoming First Assistant United States Attorney, Leone was a partner at Cooley Godward LLP. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Political Science from Colorado State University in 1978, and his law degree from the University of Colorado School of Law in 1981. Leone also clerked for former Chief Judge David W. Enoch of the Colorado Court of Appeals.

An experienced trial lawyer, Leone has an extensive background representing clients in complex commercial matters, including securities fraud, anti-trust cases, complex contract disputes and emerging intellectual property and internet litigation.

β€œIt is an honor to serve the United States and the people of Colorado,” said Leone. β€œI will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the wishes of the President of the United States and his Attorney General are carried out in a competent and complete manner.”

Leone is married with four children and serves on a variety of boards and commissions, including the Judicial Performance Review Commission for the 17th Judicial District.

The U.S. Attorney serves as the chief federal law enforcement officer in each of 93 federal judicial districts. United States Attorneys are appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate, and serve at the pleasure of the President and Attorney General. President George W. Bush will nominate a new United States Attorney for the District of Colorado.
