InfoEducated in England as lawyer, Cyrus Griffin had a law practice in Lancaster, Virginia. He entered the politics as a member of the Virginia General Assembly in 1777-1778. On 29 May 1778 Griffin and other six Virginian politicians, including Richard Henry Lee, were elected to the Continental Congress. Griffin served as a delegate from Virginia in 1778-1780 and then was appointed a justice in the Court of Appeals in Cases of Capture (1780-1787). Elected again to the Virginia General Assembly, Griffin returned to his native state and worked in the state legislature in 1786-1787.

On 23 Oct 1787, the Virginia General Assembly nominated Cyrus Griffin, James Madison and John Brown members of the Continental Congress for the period of 1787-1788. When the Congress achieved quorum by January 1788, Griffin was elected its president (22 Jan 1788). At that time the American politics were dominated by the struggle over the new Constitution between Federalists and Anti-Federalists. After the ninth state, New Hampshire, voted for the Constitution (21 Jun 1788), Griffin as president made formal announcement that the Constitution went into effect (2 Jul 1788). The Congress set up a committee (8 Jul 1788) to prepare for transfer of power, including procedures for electing representatives to the first Congress under the new Constitution and procedures for choosing the electors of the president. One of the last acts adopted by the Congress was the choice of New York as the temporary seat of the new U.S. government. On 1 Nov 1788, the Congress adjourned. Griffin was re-elected to the Continental Congress on 31 Oct 1788, but because of the organization of the new government, the Continental Congress never transacted any business in 1788-1789.

In 1789 Griffin briefly served as president of the supreme court of admiralty and then received an appointment as commissioner to the Creek Nation for negotiatiing peace treaty to end the war with the Creeks (1786-1790). Finally, Griffin returned to Virginia and for more than 20 years held an office of the judge of the US District Court of Virginia (10 Feb 1790 - 14 Dec 1810).
