Info | In 1996, Jim Lees, a virtual unknown late entry into the governor�s race, received 20% of the state-wide vote over his primary opponents Joe Manchin and Charlotte Pritt. He carried the counties of Kanawha, Putnam and Cabell. In the 2000 primary election, Jim received 38% of the Democratic vote while opposing Congressman Bob Wise. Today, Jim Lees makes his third endeavor to become West Virginia�s Governor.
Jim is a 1974 graduate of West Virginia University and a 1977 graduate of Wake Forest University School of Law. He is both a former police officer and a prosecuting attorney, having obtained 44 first degree murder convictions. Jim has been practicing law in Charleston since 1984 and makes his home in Putnam County. Jim and his wife, Laura, have four children: Annie (18) a college freshman and Chris (16), Robbie (14), Maggie (11) all students at Winfield schools.
Jim is an Elder in the Teays Valley Presbyterian Church, currently serves as Chair of the Finance & Development Committee of the Presbytery of West Virginia, is immediate past Chairman of the Board of Directors of Special Olympics West Virginia, Player Agent and board member of the Winfield Little League, and is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Tri-County YMCA. In addition to his law practice and his non-profit activities, Jim is best known for his many appearances as a co-host, guest, and commentator on Metro News Talkline. He writes a monthly column for the statewide newspaper Graffiti and is a frequent contributor to the opinion pages of the Charleston Gazette.
