| Info | Alan W. Vest was born on February 25, 1911, in Chicago Illinois, to Peter and Martha Davis Vest. He passed away on July 6, 2007, at the age of 96. He is survived by his wife, Pearl; daughter Carolyn Jons and her husband, Chuck, of Ames, Iowa; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Vest moved with his family to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, when he was in the third grade. He graduated from Sioux Falls High School, Augustana College, and the University of South Dakota Law School. He began his career practicing law in Geddes, South Dakota. In Geddes, he met third grade teacher Pearl Mogck, and they were married on June 22, 1939. They settled in Sac City, Iowa, where Vest launched an active law practice and served three terms as Sac County attorney. He practiced law for 62 years, retiring in 1996 at the age of 85.
Vest served in the United States Army during World War II. He was the chief prosecutor of the military court in Bremen, Germany, and was involved in the de-Nazification effort. The goal of this effort was to remove people from positions of influence so the Nazi philosophy would not rise again. This experience deepened his commitment to democracy, individual freedom, and free enterprise.
After serving in World War II, Vest became active in politics and served two terms as a state senator representing Carroll, Greene, and Sac counties. In 1955 he received the Des Moines Press and Radio Award for the outstanding member of the Iowa Senate. In 1957 he was elected President Pro Tempore by the members of the Senate.
During his 67 years in Sac City, Vest was active in the Methodist church, Kiwanis Club, American Legion, Masonic Lodge, Iowa State Bar Association, and Republican Party. He helped establish Loring Hospital and various recreational trails in Sac County and served on the Board of Trustees of Buena Vista College in Storm Lake.
Vest lived a life of service. He was a family man who was devoted to his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was a lifelong learner and an “early adaptor.” He was fascinated by technology and other changes over his 96-year lifetime, and optimistic about the future.
Vest was a Sac County Republican. He was elected to the Iowa Senate in November 1950 and served for eight years during the 54th, 55th, 56th, and 57th General Assemblies.
