As one of the New York State Senate's most respected and longest serving members, Senator Caesar Trunzo has been in the forefront on issues of particular importance to Long Island including tax cuts, economic development, congestion relief, environmental protection and breast cancer research.
A leader in the fight against breast cancer, Senator Trunzo sponsored the original legislation to enable taxpayers to make donations through their New York State income tax forms to help fight breast cancer. This tax check-off was included as part of a comprehensive breast cancer measure which promotes research, outreach and education. Senator Trunzo also provided the state funding to create the Suffolk County Breast Health Partnership, which coordinates the activities of local grassroots breast cancer organizations.

Senator Trunzo is Deputy Majority Whip and immediate past Chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee. Senator Trunzo has made it a priority to address Long Island's most pressing transportation needs, especially congestion relief. Senator Trunzo is leading the effort to build a rail-to-truck terminal on the grounds of the former Pilgram State Psychiatric Center. This inter-modal terminal will allow products and materials to arrive on Long Island by rail, reducing the number of trucks using the highways. Senator Trunzo also championed the change in the state's regulation that prohibited small pickup trucks to use the state's parkways; combated dangers associated with aggressive driving; provided leadership in developing initiatives to increase school bus safety, and fought for the protection of individual privacy by limiting the state's ability to sell registration and title information.

Senator Trunzo's early leadership helped transform the old Central Islip Psychiatric Center into the site for several new projects including the expansion of the New York Institute of Technology campus, The Cohalan Court Complex, The Federal Court Complex site, and most recently Touro Law School. These much needed facilities have created many permanent jobs for Long Islanders. Senator Trunzo's pioneering success in revitalizing this abandoned state facility is now used as a model statewide. Senator Trunzo has also sponsored the creation of two Economic Development Zones, in Central Islip and North Bellport, and sponsored the Suffolk Strategic Industries Program, which enables Suffolk County to promote job creation in industries compatible with Suffolk's population, geography and environment.

Senator Trunzo has always been a leading environmental voice on Long Island, and from 1978 to 1995 served as Senate Chairman of the Legislative Commission on Water Resource Needs of Long Island. Senator Trunzo sponsored laws to protect Long Island's groundwater supply, including measures which prohibited the siting of new landfills, reduced water pollution, and protected critically important open spaces from future development. Senator Trunzo's efforts laid the foundation for the Pine Barrens Protection Act. Senator Trunzo is also the sponsor of the South Shore Estuary Reserve Act, a major on- going state government initiative to protect and improve the Great South Bay and its bordering communities from Hempstead to Southampton.

Previous to the transportation appointment, Senator Trunzo had been Chairman of the Senate Civil Service and Pensions Committee. During his chairmanship Senator Trunzo had been a recognized leader in pension reform and a leader in the fight for a permanent cost of living adjustment for public retirees. Earlier in his Senate tenure Senator Trunzo had also served as Chairman of the Government Operations Committee and the Housing Committee.

Senator Trunzo was born in Brooklyn on May 11, 1926. He graduated from Fort Hamilton High School, Brooklyn, and from Heffley & Browne Business College. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Caesar Trunzo is Chairman of the Islip Town Republican Committee and is a former president of the Brentwood Republican Club. He is a member of the Brentwood Lions Club; Sons of Italy; St. Anne's Holy Name Society; a charter member of St. Anne's Council of Knights of Columbus and a honorary member of the Board of Directors of the Brentwood Youth Activities. He is a former member of the National Association of Accountants; St. Anne's Parish Council, and he is a former treasurer of the Brentwood Youth Activities and the Brentwood Little League.

Caesar Trunzo was an Accounting Supervisor of Fairchild Stratos Corp., Bay Shore, New York and Chief Accountant and Assistant Treasurer of Dayton T. Brown, Inc., Bohemia, New York. He served as a member of the Islip Town Planning Board from 1959 until he became Councilman of the Town of Islip in 1965. As an Islip Town Councilman, he oversaw the performance of the Islip Town Recreation Department; Assessor's Office; Receiver of Taxes Office; Brentwood Water District and the Data Process Department, until his election to the New York State Senate in 1972.

In addition to his Committee assignments, Senator Trunzo is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Senate Task Force on Emergency Preparedness and a member of the Senate Task Force on Voter Participation.

Senator Trunzo is married and resides with his wife Lorraine at 105 Washington Avenue, Brentwood, New York. They have two children, Laura and Michael.
