| Info | Helena Jaczek is a doctor, a dedicated health professional and a local community leader. As your representative, Helena will fight to improve public transit and further expand services at Markham-Stouffville Hospital. She is also committed to increasing opportunities for new Canadians and protecting our green space.
For 18 years, Dr. Jaczek served as the Medical Officer of Health and the Commissioner of Health Services for York Region. She was responsible for a budget of over $100 million with over 1000 employees.
Helena integrated six small ambulance services to form York Region’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Her leadership resulted in an increase in the number of paramedics and EMS stations, which led to faster response times and improved local ambulance services.
Helena championed children's health. She expanded the range of health promotion programs within York Region schools, including regular dental screenings, nutrition, and the expansion of immunization programs.
Helena continues to play an active role in environmental protection. She recently won an award from the Canadian Institute of Planners for her role in York Region's "Focus on Our Environment: York Region State of the Environment Report 2005". She is also a member of the Ontario Great Lakes Renewal Foundation Board of Directors.
Helena has demonstrated her dedication to community service. She mentored foreign trained professionals, helping them successfully integrate into life in Canada. She was awarded the 'Outstanding Alumni Mentor Award 2007' from the University of Toronto. Helena has also served on various boards, including; President of the South York Region Heart and Stroke Foundation Council, and as a member of the Capital Campaign Cabinet for the York Centre for Children, Youth and Families.
For over 11 years, Helena practiced as a family doctor, and she has an MBA from York University. She immigrated to Canada in 1963 from England. Helena has two adult children, Natasha and Nicholas, and lives with her husband Hershel Weinberg.
