Info | Doug Berger was raised in Smithfield, North Carolina, the son of Jack "Doc" Berger who, for 30 years, ran Ace Welding Company in Johnston County. His mother, Ethel (deceased) was a homemaker.
Doug's first job, at age 13, was hanging tobacco. He went to public school in Smithfield, graduating from Smithfield-Selma Senior High School. He then earned his undergraduate degree and teaching certificate from UNC-Chapel Hill. Doug taught United States history and North Carolina history at Kinston Middle School from 1985-88, during which time he also served as a football and tennis coach and as advisor to the school quiz bowl team and the school newspaper.
Doug subsequently earned a law degree from UNC-Chapel Hill and began his legal career as an investigator in the Orange County Public Defender's office. He then moved to Franklin County to serve as a prosecutor in the district attorney's office. In four years in that office, Doug prosecuted and won convictions in rape, burglary, child molestation, drug trafficking, DWI and murder cases.
Since 1994, Doug has served as a Workers' Compensation judge for the State Industrial Commission. For the past 10 years, Doug has decided cases involving workplace injuries all across North Carolina. In addition, from 1997-99 he served as advisor to the Workers' Compensation Fraud Unit.
In 2000, Doug ran unsuccessfully for North Carolina Labor Commissioner, losing by less than one percent to the Republican Cherie Berry. In the four counties comprising the new Senate District 7, Doug won 66% to 34%.
