InfoKaren Breslin is an attorney, university instructor, former federal employee, and journalist. Breslin’s Senate campaign is a natural next step in an academic and professional career that has immersed Breslin in some of the most pressing policy issues of our time: racial inequality, destruction of the natural world, and the failures of top-down, pro-growth approaches to economic prosperity.

As a young person growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, Breslin witnessed racial disparities and racism at a young age. As a graduate student in political science, Breslin sought to understand the legacy of dispossession and despair imposed upon native peoples, including attendance at a meeting of the forum that ultimately produced the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. As assistant regional director, policy adviser and public affairs specialist for the National Park Service, she was at times involved in issues that implicated native rights, including efforts by the Park Service to accommodate native religious ceremonies at Devils Tower National Monument.

In her journalism career, Breslin was exposed to a range of domestic and international policy issues. As a congressional reporter for the Bureau of National Affairs Inc., now Bloomberg Business Group, Breslin covered the massive 1992 energy bill that generously supported the fossil fuel industries but was far weaker on conservation and mandating energy reductions, policy choices that haunt us today. As a Denver-based staff correspondent, Breslin became well-versed in environmental policy issues including regulation of air and water pollution and controlling toxic materials. She also covered the statehouses of Colorado and Wyoming as well as developments in banking, the securities industry, international trade, taxation, climate change, and labor relations.

As a lawyer, Breslin has sought to support social justice and community and animal advocacy groups. She represented individuals challenging Denver’s ban on dogs deemed to pit bulls and a group trying to protect prairie dogs from destruction due to a large retail development in Castle Rock. She also assisted a local group in challenging a zoning decision by a metro-area government and groups advocating for the rights of nature and to halt fracking. In addition, she has represented individuals arrested for protesting at the Democratic National Convention in 2008 and individuals protesting Columbus Day Parades.

These various threads of professional activity and personal concern have influenced the development of Breslin’s platform, the People and Planet Agenda. The proposals contained in the platform challenge the idea that economic growth has, or can, solve all our social problems. In fact, Breslin insists that blind faith in the status quo has and will continue to worsen the social and ecological problems that confront the United States.

Breslin holds a B.A. in journalism and political science from Metropolitan State University of Denver, an M.A. in political science from the University of Colorado Denver, and a J.D. from the Sturm College of Law at University of Denver. She is currently employed as a political science instructor at the University of Colorado Denver and practices law part-time with a focus on public interest law.
