InfoJohn R. Gilliland is Senior Vice President for Government Relations at the Iowa Association of Business and Industry. Since joining ABI in 2001, John is primarily responsible for public policy advocacy in the areas of economic development, tax, liability reform, employment law, safety, and unemployment and workers' compensation.

John serves on the Iowa Workers' Compensation Advisory Committee and the state's Workers' Compensation Appeal Board. He also is a member of the Council on State Taxation and the American Tort Reform Association. Among ABI's successes during his tenure include adoption of regulatory reform measures resulting in more than $20 million annual savings to Iowa businesses.

John previously served as Iowa Deputy Secretary of State from 1995-1999 and at age 31, won his party's nomination for Secretary of State. He also practiced law with the Des Moines firm of Bradshaw, Fowler, Proctor & Fairgrave, P.C.

John earned a bachelor's degree from Cornell College and juris doctorate degree from Creighton University . He is a former clerk to the United States Attorney Charles W. Larson as well as a judicial clerk in Iowa 's First Judicial District, serving the Honorable Robert E. Mahan.

John is a member and past president of the Prevent Child Abuse Iowa Board of Directors and serves on the Cornell College Alumni Board and at Point of Grace Church.
