Info | Dalton Tanonaka is an international business leader and award-winning journalist.
Most recently, the 50-year-old Congressional candidate has been advising U.S. and Asian companies on new business development. His client list includes Foshan Plastics Group (China), Genki Sushi (Japan) and Menehune Mac (Hawaii).
Tanonaka served as president of the Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC) from 2002-2003. PBEC is the Asia-Pacific's oldest private sector organization comprised of chairmen and CEOs of the region's major companies.
Prior to that, Tanonaka had a distinguished career in journalism. His most recent position was senior anchor at CNN International in Hong Kong., where he anchored "BizAsia," the global daily broadcast focusing on the region’s important business stories and leaders, and "TalkAsia," a weekly hour of conversation with the world’s most influential people.
His other Asia experience includes covering the handover of Hong Kong to China for CNBC, and anchoring "Japan Business Today," from the studios of NHK in Tokyo. He was named "Best News Anchor" at the Asian Television Awards in Singapore in 1998.
Tanonaka's previous public service experience came as Executive Director of Economic Development for the City and County of Honolulu in 1999.
He was born in Kohala on the Big Island, and attended public schools in Honolulu, graduating from Kalani High School. He attended Kapiolani Community College and Mesa State College (Colorado) before graduating with a bachelor's degree in journalism from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois. He is married with a 6-year-old daughter.
