InfoFrank Martin, grandson of world famous carver, Mungo Martin, is the Marxist-Leninist Party candidate in the riding of Skeena-Bulkley Valley, which includes the unceded lands of his ancestral Heiltsuk nation.

Frank Martin and his lifelong partner in struggle, Telquaa of the Carrier nation, represent the resistance of generations of Indigenous peoples in America, from the north pole to Tierra del Fuego. For five decades they have fought with passion, conviction and ferocious courage against the system of colonial justice, the racist and violent Canadian state attacks and all its shameless acts of genocide committed in the name of eurocentric values and “civilization.”

Today Frank and Telquaa have taken up the cause of building a united front of all Canadian people, Indigenous and settlers, who share a common vision of a Canada free from the rule of corporate monopolies and the dictate of the U.S. empire. As did Mungo Martin and countless other heroes of resistance, for decades they have championed the dignity and just cause of their Indigenous nations, all of them together. The Right to Be is the most important right of all. Without the ability to affirm their sovereign right to their lands, resources, languages, traditions and culture, what is the expression of the Right to Be? Today, giving concrete expression to the Right to Be requires depriving governments of the use of state power to enforce monopoly right in the name of “land use,” “good governance,” ending the racist Indian Act or any other pretext.

MacMillan Bloedel, which for decades raped the forests of Haida Gwai, is now Weyerhaeuser of the U.S. It surrounds its pulp mills with barbed wire and searches its workers coming and going from work. It wants to steal what is left of the Red Cedar and Sitka Spruce forests on Haida Gwai, just as all the forest monopolies are stripping the trees and exporting raw logs from B.C. to Japan and the U.S.A. Frank Martin and Telquaa are one with the woodworkers, loggers and environmentalists who reject this corporate agenda for B.C. forests. They stand for processing B.C. wood here in B.C. How is it that this vital raw material can simply be plundered as raw logs for export? It must not pass!

Another corporate industry, farmed salmon, must also be stopped! Wild salmon have been the life blood of B.C.’s Indigenous Nations for thousands of years. Frank and Telquaa stand for the unity of all fishers, Indigenous and settlers, who need to create a sustainable wild fishery and way of life to meet the needs of the people.

There are two Indigenous persons seeking election in Skeena-Bulkley Valley. One is the former head of the Treaty Table. The other, Frank Martin and Telquaa, reject the Treaty process as a corrupt system to bankrupt the Indigenous nations while making a few lawyers rich. They denounce the colonial system of “elected councils” which replaces the time honoured Hereditary Chief system created over thousands of years by the Indigenous Nations themselves. Who are these “white men” who dictate that their law is the only law or the best law? Is the Haida law not a good law? Is the Heiltsuk law not a good law? Is the Tlingkit law not a good law? Only a racist colonial system can deny the right of a nation to self-determination and its own system of governance based on that right. To speak of self-government as a mechanism to deny that right must not pass! The Liberals are trying to impose treaties which permit monopolies to seize the remaining resources in British Columbia: trees, water, oil, gas and minerals and sell them off to the highest bidder. They want to steal oil and gas from Hecate and Queen Charlotte Strait. They want to reduce Haida Gwai and other Indigenous territories to “municipalities.” They want Indigenous lands handed over “fee simple” so they can be sold to real estate speculators and corporations.

Frank Martin, MLPC candidate Skeena-Bulkley Valley, and Telquaa call on the people to reject these Liberal schemes and colonial justice. Together, justice-loving and sovereign-minded people (loggers, mill workers, truck drivers, waitresses, teachers, nurses, everyone except the billionaires who are rare in this part of B.C.!) and sovereign Indigenous peoples must unite to defeat the Liberal Party schemes!
