Journal; moved to Troy, N.Y., and engaged in newspaper work; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1879 and commenced practice in Troy; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth Congress and served from March 4, 1895, to January 7, 1897, when he resigned to become Governor; Governor of New York 1897-1899; resumed the practice of law in New York City; died in Troy, N.Y., March 22, 1913; the remains were cremated and placed in a sepulcher on his farm near Freedom, Carroll County, N.H.
